In Today's Sermon...

"Marriage is a one-way street in a car with no reverse gear. And the next roundabout is death."

How uplifting.

And, "You must love your wife, even if her ugali (maize meal) regularly disintegrates."

(I've spent all day trying to decide if this is a Kenyan euphemism, and if so, for what?)

Hmmm. I don't think I like that perspective on marriage! Maybe it's because my ugali regularly disintegrates.

Who knows! Given my Zimbabwean friend's account of how marriages are done and the harrowing gauntlet brides face, it's a wonder there are any married couples in Zim! The kicker (to me) was that the bride is awakened at 4am the day after her wedding (after being kept up half the night by guests) and is expected to sweep the entire property, cook the most culinarily difficult traditional meal, serve her new family, and bring water to everyone before she can be accepted as part of the family. Maybe ugali is like that meal.
